Cybersecurity incidents involving the systems and data of third-party vendors are on the rise for utilities in the United States. A 2024 analysis by KPMG found that nearly half of the cyber breaches in the energy sector come from third-party platforms.
It’s a worrying trend that has directly impacted electric cooperatives, and industry cyber professionals are working hard to counteract it.
In this episode, NRECA Director of Cybersecurity Carter Manucy joins us to talk about what co-ops are seeing and what they’re doing to enhance security and mitigate this threat, and Tanner Greer, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Blue Ridge Energy in North Carolina, will talk about how his co-op responded to and recovered from a third-party cyber incident in 2023.
